Engineering Geology

The EG is responsible for the following:Engineering Geology Branch
• Monitoring of landside and mass erosion events.
• Provision of advice to relevant authorities on the nature and public safety issues following significant landslides and mass erosion events.

• Field assessments of significant landslides and mass erosion events.
• Strategic mapping and assessments of the potential hazards of landslides and mass erosion events.
• Maintenance of databases holding information on landslides and mass erosion events.
• Research into slope stability and mass erosion processes with the aim of improving monitoring and assessment capabilities.
• Awareness programs concerning landslides and mass erosion hazards.
• Provide geotechnical advice to relevant authorities on major infrastructure development

 

Geotechnical Materials Testing Laboratory

Geotechnical Materials Testing Laboratory (GMTL) supplements landslide hazard mapping work carried out by EGB. It is capable of testing construction materials. Soil and rock samples from landslide areas undergo relevant tests and analyses to provide vital information for assessment purposes.

The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the art field and laboratory equipment and is also able to conduct geotechnical materials testing services for major infrastructure developments apart from testing for assessment of landslide prone areas.
